Expressive Language Development

Instruction in vocabulary, grammar, sentence formulation, and word retrieval strategies.

Narrative Development

Analysis of how a student produces oral and written stories, and provide therapy based on the student’s individual needs. This skill develops oral expression and reading comprehension.

Expository Text Instruction

Specific instruction to teach students to identify and use six common expository writing styles: descriptive, enumerative, sequence, cause/effect, problem/solution, and compare/contrast. This enables students to understand and summarize their textbooks.

My Accomplishments:

  • Developed and taught the first phonological awareness classes used within a school for students with learning disabilities

  • Produced a set of lessons in word retrieval strategies for small group instruction, and trained a speech language assistant in the implementation of these lessons.

  • Contributed to two published instructional manuals from Mindwing Concepts: The Story Grammar Marker and The ThemeMaker.

  • Provided normative data for the Test of Narrative Language by Gillam & Pearson.

  • Incorporated expository text instruction into science and social studies classrooms using teacher observation, consultation, and model lessons.

  • Successfully mentored students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in Speech Language Pathology.

  • Currently review professional books for the publication Advance for Speech Language Pathologists.
